Four days after the 2026 Golden Globe Awards, discussion continues around a strongly worded political statement made by actor Mark Ruffalo, in which he sharply criticized President Donald Trump.
Ruffalo attended the ceremony with his wife, Sunrise Coigney, after being nominated for Best Actor in a Drama Television Series for his role in Task. The award ultimately went to Noah Wyle, but Ruffalo used his appearance to voice political concerns rather than focus on the competition.
The actor, who has long been outspoken on progressive issues, has frequently criticized Republican leadership. During Trump’s first presidency, Ruffalo publicly described him as a major threat to democracy and repeatedly warned about the influence of wealth and power in politics, as well as the urgency of addressing climate change.
In later years, Ruffalo continued to comment on Trump-related legal controversies, government actions, and media restrictions, often framing them as signs of growing authoritarianism.
He has also appeared at protests opposing concentrated political power and what he sees as erosion of civil rights.

At this year’s Golden Globes, a journalist noticed Ruffalo wearing a pin critical of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). When asked about it, Ruffalo said it was meant to honor Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis resident who was killed during an ICE operation—an incident that has since led to protests nationwide.
During the exchange, Ruffalo accused Trump of disregarding international law and moral responsibility, referencing recent geopolitical actions and Trump’s past legal cases. He described the former president in extremely harsh terms and argued that the country was moving away from what he believes America should represent.
Ruffalo said his remarks were motivated by fear and concern for people who feel unsafe or marginalized, adding that he still loves the country but no longer recognizes the direction it is heading.
Following the comments, the White House responded through its communications director, who dismissed Ruffalo’s statements and criticized both his acting career and credibility, accusing him of spreading falsehoods.
The exchange has further fueled debate over the role of celebrities in political discourse and the increasingly sharp tone surrounding U.S. politics.
