Earthquake in Myanmar damages many historical buildings

Some famous historical buildings in Myanmar such as Mandalay Palace, Masoyein Monastery, Awa Bridge were severely damaged after the 7.7-magnitude earthquake.

According to Myanmar Now, the earthquake on March 28 caused the most damage to Sagaing and the country’s second largest city, Mandalay, which is home to many famous historical buildings.

Witnesses said that part of the historic Mandalay Palace was severely damaged. A bridge in Sagaing town, Sagaing region, was completely destroyed by the earthquake.

Mandalay Palace, located in the heart of Mandalay City, is the last royal palace in Myanmar, built in 1857 under the reign of King Mindon. Although heavily damaged during World War II, the palace was restored in the 1990s and became a popular tourist destination.

With its traditional teak architecture, vast grounds and surrounding ramparts, the palace is a historical symbol of Mandalay, attracting visitors to explore Myanmar’s royal past.

Masoyein Monastery, located in Mandalay city, about 2 km southwest of Mandalay Palace, was also severely damaged. This is one of the largest and most influential monasteries in the region, home to thousands of monks and an important center of Buddhist studies in Myanmar.

Mahamuni Temple also collapsed due to the earthquake, people fled the building. This temple is one of the famous sacred destinations in Myanmar.

Mahamuni Temple was built in 1784, has a 4 meter high Mahamuni Buddha statue gilded with tons of gold. It also preserves many Khmer reliefs originating from Angkor.

Myanmar’s military government has declared a state of emergency in 6 regions while Thailand has declared the capital Bangkok a disaster area. Search and rescue operations are underway and there have been no reports of casualties.
