A girl went missing from her home, and her life was saved by a hand signal that she learned from TikTok. The teen was able to notify the people driving behind her that she needed help.
Kentucky police revealed that after going missing, the 16-year-old girl could discreetly alert someone about the situation. The “Signal for Help” developed by the Canadian Women’s Foundation, has been lauded. Officer Gilbert Acciardo, who is the public affairs officer for the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, said that it was “probably the best thing” he had seen in his almost 50 years of service.
The hand gesture allows victims facing danger to tell someone that they need help. Thankfully, the girl who had been kid.nap.ped knew about this life-saving but straightforward hand signal.
The signal went viral on TikTok during 2020.The signal allowed many people to ask for help quietly.
It is also simple and easy to remember this signal. You just place your palms toward the camera and then tuck your thumb inwards onto your palm. The idea is that they “trap” their thumb, referring to the victims themselves being trapped. The gesture is easy enough to learn and recognize.
Many called the girl smart while others gave recognition to the Canadian Women’s Foundation becausse of creating the hand signal. One netizen said:
“I would have never known what that hand gesture was, but now I do. This needs to be taught.”
Someone else added: “Respect to the driver that recognized the hand signals and called the police, they saved that girl’s life.”
Thankfully, the signal of missing girl reached a driver that understood what she was doing, and it made all the difference.
