Little Johnny, a notoriously clever seventh-grader, was the absolute bane of his English teacher’s existence because he questioned every single rule in the language.
One afternoon during grammar class, Johnny raised his hand. “Teacher, why do we completely ignore certain letters when we speak? Like the letter H in words like Hour and Honour? Why is it even there?”
The teacher sighed, adjusted her glasses, and replied with a patronizing smile, “Johnny, we aren’t ignoring them. They are simply considered silent.”
Johnny scratched his head, looking completely unconvinced, but dropped the subject.
The Lunch Break Trap
An hour later, the lunch bell rang. The teacher, buried under a mountain of essays to grade, handed Johnny her packed lunch container from the staff fridge. “Johnny, be a dear and go down to the cafeteria to HEAT my food for me, will you?”
“Sure thing, teacher!” Johnny grinned, grabbing the container.
Twenty minutes later, Johnny marched back into the classroom and proudly placed the plastic container on her desk. The teacher popped open the lid, only to find it completely spotless and empty. Not a single crumb remained.
The teacher gasped, her eyes widening in fury. “Johnny! What on earth happened here?! I explicitly told you to go and HEAT my food, and you are returning a completely empty container!”
Johnny smiled innocently, folded his arms, and replied:
“Well, Madam… I just assumed the H was silent.”
