A homeless man, down on his luck, decided to visit a Catholic church known for its rather “high-society” reputation.
The moment the ushers saw his dirty, worn clothes, they stopped him at the door.
“Can we help you?” one of them asked.
The man smiled and said, “I was praying, and the Lord told me to come to this church.”
The ushers looked at one another.
“Well,” one said politely, “why don’t you go home and pray a little more? Maybe the Lord will give you a different answer.”
So the man left.
The following Sunday, he returned.
Once again, the ushers stopped him at the door.
“Well?” one of them asked. “Did you pray again? Did you get a different answer?”
“Yes, I did,” the man replied.
The ushers smiled.
“And what did the Lord say?”
The man shrugged.
“I told Him you people didn’t want me here.”
“And?”
The man smiled.
“The Lord said, ‘Keep trying, son. I’ve been trying to get into that church for years… and I haven’t made it in yet either.’”
Silence.
Suddenly, those church doors didn’t seem quite as holy as everyone thought.
