The Question That Stopped the Whole Room

On her very first day as manager of a retirement community, a no-nonsense woman gathered all the residents in the recreation hall for an orientation.

She smiled politely, adjusted her glasses, and announced,

“I’d like everyone to understand our rules from the very beginning.”

The room fell silent.

“The women’s residence is strictly off-limits to all men, and the men’s residence is off-limits to all women.”

Several of the older residents exchanged amused glances.

“Anyone caught breaking this rule will receive a **$20 fine** for the first offense.”

She paused to let it sink in.

“A second offense will result in a **$60 fine**.”

A few people nodded.

“And a third offense,” she continued firmly, “will cost you **$180**.”

The manager looked around the room.

“Are there any questions?”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then an elderly gentleman in the back slowly raised his hand, stood up with a friendly smile, cleared his throat, and asked,

“So… how much is the season pass?”
