By eliminating a spider you may be taking an important predator out of your home

As you spot a spider crawling through your home, perhaps your first instinct will be to grab something and kill it. but this may be doing more harm than good.

Their unusual appearance, rapid movements and the potential for venom are just some reasons why we are fearful of spiders.

These eight-legged creatures are rarely harmful in the UK. According to AnimalWised, while spider bites aren’t uncommon, of the over 650 different species of spiders in the UK, just 12 are venomous enough to cause humans severe pain.

In general, spiders want to avoid humans and are much more scared of us than vice versa, meaning they will only bite as a defense mechanism if they are provoked.

They usually only bite humans in case they feel threatened, like when they’re trapped or crushed are often docile and friendly.

If you squish a spider, this doesn’t just cost the arachnid its life, it may take an important predator out of your home.

Though eliminating the unwelcome spider may bring about tranquility, this will only last a short time as experts say to prepare for an influx of other bugs creeping and crawling their way in.

Spiders are natural predators of the bug world, capturing pests within your home that might otherwise be scuttling about and laying eggs.

Pests like cockroaches, mosquitos, earwigs and even clothing moths could make a comeback in your home if there are no spiders.

Spiders also eat other spiders too, so you could end up with even more moving in pretty quickly after you got rid of the last one.

Even though almost all spiders are venomous, only a few can cause serious harm to humans. Most spider bites are not harmful to humans because their fangs are too short or fragile to penetrate human skin.

How to get rid of a spider safely

If you do spot a spider and really can’t stand the thought of it, there are many ways you can safely move the spider on without causing it any harm.

Try capturing it with a jar and then release it outside.
